About Sarah De Shon

*(No longer accepting new patients) Sarah is a licensed clinical social worker who got her “start” in the field as a young child accompanying her mother on home visits with the families she worked with (with permission, of course). She loved sitting and listening to the stories her mother’s clients told and learning about how their families functioned. As she got older, Sarah realized that it was the resiliency of others that she was so struck by. She has always been someone that others feel comfortable opening up to, even in the most casual settings, and her genuine interest in others and strengths based lens has driven her success in her field.

Sarah obtained her graduate degree in social work from the University of Michigan in 2011 and she has spent the majority of her career since then working with children and families in a variety of contexts within the child welfare system. Her experience working with a population that is often highly traumatized gave her a unique perspective on triggers and the way in which our history, upbringing, and relationships impact our current behavior and our view of our experiences. Sarah has worked with clients across the life span, helping with issues that range from prenatal experiences and infant bonding and attachment to issues related to aging and end of life.

Sarah believes that each individual comes with a unique set of needs, challenges, and strengths and she believes that the therapeutic relationship should be centered around those unique circumstances. She works with her clients to set goals and treatment plans that are creative and specific to their individual needs. Rather than sticking to a regimented therapeutic curriculum, Sarah believes in using her broad experience and knowledge of multiple modalities to find what works best for the person she is working with. She is constantly seeking new information and training in order to improve her practice.

More than anything, Sarah views her role as a partner in the therapeutic process, striving to understand and connect dots that her clients may not already see. She sees her client’s “ah ha moments” in treatment as the small victories that can impact the greatest change. Sarah loves what she does and feels honored that her clients trust her to engage in this work with them.
