About Kayla Pape

One of the most important things a counselor can do is create an open and safe environment for someone to tell their story and share their pain. The first thing Kayla strives to do when you come to session is make you feel safe and comfortable.  Kayla listens with an open mind to hear anything you feel is important and receive it with unconditional positive regard.  She aims to create a comforting and welcoming environment for every client that walks through the door.  Kayla previously worked in inpatient psychiatric facilities as well as in community mental health before transitioning into private practice.

Kayla primarily works from an ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) framework. This focuses on what is going on in your life, what may be bothering you, why you decided to come to counseling. ACT therapy maintains that sometimes, those things may never go away, and despite the things that are wrong in our lives, we continue to live and can learn to live well even if things aren’t going according to plans. Kayla works with your values, your dreams and goals, and helps to make a committed plan of action to reach them while managing the less-than-ideal things going on.  She is focused on helping you learn to cope in less than ideal conditions while teaching your skills to thrive in life.

Kayla is also experienced in CBT as well as narrative therapy, person-centered therapy, and different forms of art and drama therapy. She has worked extensively with addictions and substance use, anger management, and issues in parenting, and has knowledge centered around crisis management. Kayla is a flexible counselor, and knows that not everyone is going to like or benefit from the same type of therapy. She aims to find what works best for each individual, and work with that to achieve the best results for the individual.

When you come into Kayla’s office, you matter. Kayla focuses on the person, and wants to assist you in becoming who you want to be, as well as where you want to be. That looks different for every individual, and Kayla wants each client to be involved in creating their own plan for therapy, rather than focusing on a diagnosis and how to “fix” a person.  You’re not broken.  Kayla wants to help get you the skills you need to address your issues and/or symptoms in a healthier manner.

Kayla’s personal passion lies in grief and bereavement following the loss of a loved one. She is extremely interested in what the response to loss looks like, as well as how to support someone in the aftermath. Often, people will think that time heals all wounds, and support and intervention after a death is not necessary. Kayla is a big advocate for education about death and dying for children, as well as different types of therapy for the survivor, and leaving room for them to memorialize their lost loved one.

Kayla has a deep love and connection for animals and has a number of rescue animals of all types in her life.  She has a cat named Cat Kayla, a bearded dragon, an axoloti, geckos, mice and a lot of fish.  She has a passion for life and tries to find the beauty in every day while meeting even the toughest days with a smile.
